The final WET event of 2016 was a very special dusk-O expertly organized by Linda and Marie. Racers began as the sun had just set and darkness was falling collecting. The 11 controls collected in the dark were a good mix of on and off trail - a good difficulty and a great way to both wind up the WET series and prep for this weekend's BCOC's in Whistler!

A huge thanks goes out to all who participated in this year's WET events - whether by organizing an event, picking up controls or simply coming out and having fun. We will most definitely bring it back again for 2017 - same time, just after Determinator finishes end of May - so stay tuned

Roger put on an awesome technical course at Layritz/Camosun - I managed a clean victory which was a nice redemption from last week. Fastest splits were all over the board with myself, Tobi, Brett, John and Jade all taking a handful. Nice to see Angus at the event while he's back in town for a while!

Next week will be the final WET of the season at Royal Roads- as a special treat Linda and Marie will be organizing a DUSK-O which will start as night is falling at 7pm. Bring your headlamp! After the event we'll grab food & beer at The Six Mile pub on Sooke Rd. See you there!

Jessica organized a fun sprint through Beacon Hill Park using a clever variation on pin-flags. Each pin flag had a secret letter written on it which runners had to jot down on their control guide to prove they had visited the pin flag. A great solution to the problem of not being able to use SI controls on this map (they get stolen in about 4.2 seconds).

Beacon Hill is a runners course, and speedy Brett managed first place by making no navigational errors and ripping through the park at top speed. I was a distant second place by a good couple of minutes. A great time was had by all! Darkness is falling earlier and earlier - only a couple of WETs left - make sure to take advantage of the next two weeks for the final 2 events!

Tonight was a special Bike-O event - same as regular orienteering, but super fast paced and on a bike! The course was meticulously planned to facilitate fast, fluid checkpoints while allowing for route choice and minimizing the need to get off your bike to punch controls. Truly a masterpiece in course design - and a tragic mistake for those who skipped this event. Alright, enough bragging - here are the highlights:

Despite torrential downpour all day, the rain subsided for a few hours for our event. Ben had the fastest time by a huge margin - we all know when Ben shows up, he does not mess around. Ben claimed fastest split on all but two controls and the finish leg. Wow. Fast rides by JD, Andrew and Nat, but not quite fast enough. Diana opted to run the course instead of using a bike and had a pretty decent time considering.

I hope you all had fun at this event! We will definitely do a repeat next summer.

Great turnout tonight for a speedy sprint through Uplands Park. Although extremely threatening, the rain held off for the event. Andrew decided this was his week to win and kicked us all directly in the ass, leaving everyone in the dust, big time. Andrew even had almost 2 full minutes on normally hard-to-beat Brett making this an absolute blowout - nice work Andrew. Great runs by lots of regulars, noteably Theresa, who edged out Magdalena by 8 seconds. Close times between Brett and myself too, except I mispunched #5 and was sadly disqualified. Thanks to Chris for organizing a fun course with lots of controls.

Next week will be a special Bike-Orienteering at Uvic - Bring your Bike and Helmet - The course will be flat and non-mountainous, so the bike can be any kind you want - mountain bike, road bike, commuter, or even one of those Old Style big-wheel bikes from the 1920's. If you don't have a bike, borrow one! We'll have a special Bike-optimized course prepared for you which will require your navigation skills, biking prowess and all of your determination. To make things even more epic, we will be doing this on the first day of school, so navigating thousands of wandering students will come into play.

Map to meeting location will be posted soon. See you next Wedesday!

Theresa organized a special relay event where partners shared SI sticks and took turns racing with 4 maps, 4 controls per turn. High Rock is a small park good for lightning fast orienteering and little room for error, perfect for a relay event. With many regulars away on summer vacation, Team Brett/Scott dominated the course, claiming all but a handful of fastest splits. Nice work to Linda, Marie, Val and Leigh who each nabbed one as well. Thanks Theresa for doing a great job wrangling the 4 maps needed for this event. See you all next at Uplands Park!

Linda and Marie organized an awesome training event that paired controls together into "Dog Bones". Dog Bones can be collected in any order, like a Score-O, but you have you get both controls in a bone before going to another bone. This adds a strategic element and places much importance on map reading and planning. This was the best turnout for a WET event so far - there was even a waiting list for maps for a bit!

It was a tight race - JD crushed the course and took 1st place, despite some serious competition being present. Nice work John. Long time VICO member Erica who happened to be in town took second place, only 14 seconds behind. Also great run by Andrew who was less than 30 second behind Erica.

I managed to figure out times for each Dog Bone leg regardless of which direction you travelled in - so be sure to check out the painstakingly manually entered results above. See you next week at High Rock Park in Esquimalt for another special event! Details to come soon.

Great turnout tonight for a sprint through Juan de Fuca park - Andrew + crew put together a fun 18-control course, with a little something for everybody. Runners with the two fastest times (Brett and I) were both disqualified- I neglected to visit C10 at all, and Brett decided to go thick-black-line-hopping into restricted areas.

Congrats to Linda for a clean fast run, getting all the controls and not jumping fences! :) Magdalena was on Linda's heels missing victory by about 30 seconds. Also of note, newcomers Jordan + Ryan had a great run, except for a deadly 40+ minute error on C1. Ouch -It happens.

See you next week at Uvic!

Tobi organized an excellent woodsy run, full of route choice and lots of ways to get lost! It was anyone's race with many difficult navigation decisions to be made. In the end, I managed to sneak into 1st place beating out my long time rival JD by less than a minute. Roger was close behind and Linda + Marie close behind him! Theresa and Brett were seconds apart from each other as well. Speedy-but-third-place Roger claimed the most splits with 7 out of 15. 4 went to John, 3 to Brett and only 2 to the winning runner. (1 really, since C5 was a tie for fastest split).

This was definitely a map with less features, forcing you to rely more on compass work and reading contours - super fun, thanks to Tobi for putting it on!

Don't forget there is an "official" VICO event this Sunday at Beaver Lake - see you there and of course, next Wednesday!

Jade and Sandra put on an awesome partner exercise in the same format as WET #5 two weeks ago. We had an great turnout, enough for 6 and a half teams with some good competition. John and I sqeaked in a 1st place victory by a mere 2 seconds over speedy Heather and Lara. The girls saved about a minute by drawing fast but gave back all that time in the run. In the end it came down to an exhilarating sprint to the finish!

Brett had the fastest overall run of Course 2 runners, with John only 12 seconds behind him. Sadly Magdaléna had a minor bobble at C2+C3 keeping the Brett/Mag team out of the winner's circle. Could have been that 11km ride from Uvic to Beaver Lake that did her in. Roger also had an amazing run with 5 / 10 fastest splits on Course 1, but trouble on C3 + C9 sealed his fate. There is just zero room for error on short sprint maps!

We could not have asked for nicer weather. Huge thanks to Jade + Sandra for organizing this event, which is easily 3x the work of a regular course. See you next week at Lansdowne Camosun!

Tonight's WET took place at the overgrown and undermapped Mt. Doug Park where much bushwhacking is always available to you. Despite the slightly controversial Control #3 which threw a few people off, it was a super fun and challenging course! John D sqeaked in a 1st place run by being the fastest on 4 splits (and winning the lottery on #3). Other difficult but accurate controls such as #10 ensured that you were really on point for each checkpoint.

Thanks to Brett and Magdalena for putting on a great event! We also had an excellent turnout, however the course claimed many casualties with only 5 of 14 managing to finish. VICO is in the process of having Mt. Doug re-mapped this year, so stay tuned for a map upgrade.

See you next week at Beaver Lake where Jade and Sandra plan to re-create the partner map-drawing exercise from 2 weeks ago!

Tonight's WET was a special 2-person partner exercise focusing on the obscure skills of map drawing and teamwork. Each team member started with a different empty "Controls only" map (no underlying base map) and had to sketch in the map features for their teammate. Teams had as much time as needed to draw, but the clock started upon pen touching paper! When both members were ready, they swapped maps and ran individual courses using their partners' horrific and rushed map drawings.

Magdaléna and Brett came in first place with a time of 35:46 (time it took for both team members to return)
strategically spending a bit more time drawing (14 min) than second-place team Linda and Marie (18 min). Unlikely teammates John and Diana were only minutes behind Jade and Sandra, who looked like they were having a great time! Richard's and Heather's drawing skills left much to be desired for their respective unfortunate partners Claire and Kathleen who roamed the campus for well over an hour.

As a side benefit to this event, we now have several hilarious 2-D representations of the Layritz Park / Camosun Interurban campus which are alI posted here for your enjoyment. Thanks to everyone who came out for tonight, and also to everyone who helped pick up controls. See you next week at Mt. Doug!

Could not have asked for nicer weather for WET #4 at Royal Roads. Thanks to Richard and Claire for putting on an awesome and challenging course. The control layout pretty much forced you to use compass bearings and pace counting, meaning you really earned each control you discovered. John D is clearly back from his foot injury sneaking in a victory and beating me out by 52 seconds! Nice work JD. We should take a moment to notice that John only had 1 fastest split, and his secret to winning was being careful and steady and not making mistakes on any single control. This shows you can win from navigation, and speed is not always the #1 factor.

Other noteworthy points - Linda had a good run despite losing her dog for 20-25 minutes. Andrew also had a great run, and would have been within seconds of 1st place except for a minor error on C8. Likewise for Magdelinda who was destined to become a contender until meeting her match on C4.

4 weeks into the WET series and we are getting some really great courses so far! See you next week for a special event.

John put on an awesome course at Beaver Lake, and we had a good turnout despite the rain. Ben pulled off a victory by the skin of his damn teeth. Congrats Ben on a clean run. It truly was anyone's race today though with the top 5 finishers all within 60 seconds of each other. Fastest splits were obtained by a full 50% of competitors (7 different people), setting a new record for a WET event. Theresa made some poor route choices and learned some important life lessons this week. Nice try Theresa, just keep at it girl. See you all next for Richard's course location TBA.

Leigh organized what looks to be a super fun GOAT-O race at Uvic this week! I missed this one unfortunately, but Brett certainly did not, taking 1st place without skipping a control. Long-lost Happy showed up and had some fun with his family, and Tyler suffered through with a hip injury. Nice work to Heather who beat out all the hot shots and claimed the fastest time on #12! Next week John has volunteered to run the event at Beaver Lake with his injured foot - see you there!

The first WET event of the summer turned out to be very sweet, with all rain stopping well before the event! JD sprinted his way to victory with Tobi close behind. Jade and Ben were exacty TIED for 3rd place, something that doesn't happen very often! We ranked Ben above in the leader boards because he had three "fastest splits" and Jade got shut out in the cold. Thanks to everyone who came out for a run, and also to Leigh for helping out. My sincere apologies about bush-whacky control #5, ugh that one was ugly. See you next week at Uvic!
