2019 Wednesday Evening Training (WET)

Back once again for the 8th year running, Wednesday Evening Training (WET) returns! The WET series is an unofficial weekly Orienteering training event organized and run by volunteers. The WET schedule is below - if you can commit to organizing an event one week, please email scott.sheldrake@gmail.com (or send a text to 250-884-7669) to reserve a date and location!

Ross organized a very fun training excercise for the final WET event of the season : a self-timed (honor system) race focused on honing your attack skills. The idea was to focus less on the actual control feature itself (ie Pit, building, cliff etc) and more on the surrounding features leading up to that control (ie - long row of trees, series of cliffs, etc). Using so called "catching features" is a valuable skill in orienteering and can help you stay on track, hit controls with more accuracy and avoid over/under running a control. Thanks to Ross for creating a fun training event at Beacon Hill Park. Because this was a self-timed event, the times are not fully accurate and many people decided to lose the watch and just enjoy the excercise. So congrats to Ben who "probably" won.. :)

Thanks to all who participated in WET this year - we'll be back again next summer for more amazing orienteering training. Be sure to check the regular club website for upcoming public events (http://whyjustrun.ca) or follow us on Facebook - (Victoria Orienteering).

Thanks and see you out there!

Huge thanks to Ben for putting on a great course at Beaver Lake this eve. It was a tight race between Andrey, Scott and John with 90 seconds separating them all. Nice to see Jer and Virginia bringing Marcus out to see the beepy things. Darkness is falling earlier these day, and next week may be the final WET.. don't miss it

Roger organized a great training event in which each control had two flags and SI stations, and the correct one was ascertained from reading the control descriptions. The excerise forced you to actually read those control descriptions - who knew they were so helpful? Ben had a clean fast run with no mistakes and took 1st place. Many others had a time penalty for one reason or another. It was a challenging course on an awesome map, thanks to Roger for putting on a top notch event. See you next week at Juan de Fuca!

Kathleen organized a great rip through Mt. Doug - her first time organizing an event! It was a great course, with some good route choice and not overly punishing (Mt. Doug is steep!) :) Andrey had a nice fast run, besting Roger 2nd place by over 2 minutes. See you next week at Francis King!

Tonights WET was a special "Line-O" in which the map had no visible controls, but rather a long purple line to follow. Following it correctly would mean stumbling across all 12 controls! This proved to be tricky for many, and an excellent map reading excercise. It was a beautiful evening and the weather was perfect - Ben had a stellar run and edged out Andrey for first place, despite only being fastest on one control - showing the importance of being consistent. Brett almost certainly had first place except for a bobble at the final leg. Jordan gets the award for most determined to find C7 :)

A huge thanks to Val for creating an original event and designing a course that took us through some fun areas and sweeping ocean vistas!

Thanks to Doug for organizing a fun and challenging rip through lower Beaver Lake Park. Almost all controls were off-trail and more difficult to obtain, pushing the envolope for some newer to Orienteering! Here are the results from the WET. And it was Wet, particularly setting!

It poured before the start time; so the courses were wet. Maybe that turned off some potential competitors. Those that came were treated to 2 complete courses on a map with ONLY CONTOURS!

All rose to the challenge (including a miss-hang on B4) but Ben zoomed through take both courses.

Hopefully contour skills are honed. This exercise could be repeated later this year or next for those that want some contour sharpening.

Thanks to Leigh for organizing a fun rip through Layritz/Camosun Interurban on short notice! It was a tight race for 1st place with Andrey sneaking in 55 second ahead of the competition. This was a classic sprint-O and speed was of utmost importance! We had a great turnout and nice weather, hopefully this trend continues! Next week we have no volunteer, so there may be a 2 week gap until WET#3 - will post updates here.

We had a great start to the WET season - Larry brought back the epic Donut-hole event from last year - in this event the control circles are whited out preventing you from seeing the part of the map surrounding the control location. This forces runners to use other information and skill to find the control. True to form Larry had the missing donut holes back at the start for us to enjoy after. Roger had a blazing fast run and swept the course in 39 minutes with Ben and Uknown 6-7 minutes behind. Thanks to all who came out, and see you next week!
