12 brave runners blasted through the 30 degree heat on a gorgeous summer eve to complete tonight's Layritz course. Thanks to Larry for organizing a classic "Donut O" in which the center of the control marker was blanked out on the map, preventing you from using the closest landmarks and adding extra challenge. C16 was stolen by campus Security affecting Lena, Phyllipa and Kurt's run - but we got it back! Nice run Andrey!

See you next week at Beaver Lake!

Andrey organized a very fun and challenging dog-bones event. Controls were grouped in pairs or "dog-bones" on the map. You could obtain the controls in any order you wanted, but once you started a dog-bone pair you needed to get it's counterpart. The length of bone varied and navigation strategy came into play big time. Thanks to all who made it out, and huge thanks to Andrey for putting on a fun event!

Tobi put on an awesome classic Orienteering event in the runnable forests of northern Francis King Park. A wake-up call for many who have forgotten their compass skills, this course was masterfully planned and unforgiving. Despite the 1:2000 scale, a small navigation error could cost you dearly on a map without plentiful handrails and buildings. Halfway through the course was a map exchange which split the course into two segments and added an element of mystery and challenge. Thanks to Tobi, Augustin and crew for organzing and cleaning up the event. Be sure to grab your favourite experienced VICO member for a compass refresher next week because there will be more to come!

Pam and Carsten organized an awesome GOAT format sprint through Uplands Park with the help of Nat and Kim ( I think). GOAT format allows you to skip any one control of your choosing. Andrey crushed the course and took 1st place by a healthy margin even forgetting to skip a control! A few got lost, but the run was enjoyed by all. Our time sync is out on the starting control so anyone with a run time faster than 40 seconds or so does not display on C1. We'll get this fixed for the next race.. See you at Thetis in a week!

Thanks to Leigh and Jade for placing 13 controls carefully in the Thetis Lake woods. Tonight was a GOAT format (skip any one control of your choosing) - #10 seemed the best skip option as Pam and Carsten learned the hard way! Andrey had a fast run combined with highly accurate navigation giving him the crown. On the short course, Sophie and Mom blazed through the woods and beat Elise by a hair. Forest courses are the true test of navigation skill and knowing how to use a compass suddenly becomes very valuable. Time to YouTube "Thumb Compass" Next week will be an urban reprieve followed by a return to the woods in 2 weeks. See you out there!

Jeremy organized a very awesome Street-O around Brentwood Bay in a Score-O format (get controls in any order 60 minutes max). In classic Street-O style, instead of controls, you had to answer clues about the location you were in. Participants were given the option to Cycle, Run or Walk - it was around 28 degrees C - the perfect night for a cycle or a lovely walk - however a few people were crazy enough to run the course too. Andrey stole the #1 position from Scott + India with a fast bike and good strategy. Pam out-ran the rest by 1 point - nice job. Huge thanks to Jeremy for managing to squeeze in this event which would have been a decent amount of work. Hopefully the amazing weather holds for next week!

Racers could choose to do the course on foot or bike, with a long and short course options. India and Scott came out on top for the Bike category, with an ultra speedy ride. Andrey's foot is clearly feeling a lot better as he smoked the competition by a huge margin for fastest time on foot. Thanks to all who helped stay and clean up. We are losing light fast, and only have one remaining WET event of the season - hope to see you next week!
